DLR-DAAD PhD Research Fellowships

German Aerospace Research Center (DLR) and the German Academic Exchange Service (knows as DAAD) are offering DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships program.In this program there is extensive research and development work in the fields of Aeronautics, Space, Transportation and Energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. As Germany’s space agency, DLR has been given responsibility for the forward planning and the implementation of the German space program by the German federal government as well as for the international representation of German interests. Approximately 8,000 people are employed in DLR´s 33 institutes and facilities at 20 locations in Germany.

Who can apply?

  • Highly-qualified foreign doctoral and
  • postdoctoral students and
  • senior scientists
  • not be of German nationality

DLR-DAAD Fellowships are defined and awarded on an individual basis. Each fellowship announcement will indicate the specific qualification requirements and terms of visit.

What can be funded?

The current offers are published under DLR-DAAD Fellowships – Current offers on the homepages of the DAAD and the DLR in the research fields:

Duration of the funding of DLR-DAAD program

Below are the three main categories are available for funding:

  • Type A – Doctoral Student’s: 36 months
  • Type B – Postdoctoral Students: 6 to 24 months
  • Type C – Senior Scientists: 1 to 3 months

Scholarship amount of DLR-DAAD program will cover following:

  • Doctoral Students (Doctorate in Germany): monthly installment of 1,365 Euros (plus allowance for materials of 102 Euros); e.g. flat-rate travel allowance, health insurance, family allowances
  • Postdoctoral Students (Research in Germany): 2,000 Euros per month; any other allowances
  • Senior Scientists (Research in Germany): 2,300 Euros per month; any other allowances

What requirements must be met?

At the time of their application, applicants for a DLR-DAAD Fellowship must

  • be able to prove their outstanding study or research achievements and
  • Type A applicants must have completed their studies or research with a university degree in the last six years
  • Type B applicants must have completed their studies with a PhD in the last two years
  • Type C applicants must applicants must be working in higher education or at a research institute; positions are open to outstandingly-qualified academics and scientists who should generally hold a doctorate/ Ph.D.
  • have to submit an appropriate language certificate (see below in required documents list),

Application documents

Application will be filled and send through online DAAD portal and letters of recommendation by post to the application address (below is postal address). Certificates, proof of credits, certifications and translations may be scanned in non-certified form and uploaded to the DAAD portal. DAAD’s Head Office in Bonn will only request certified copies of the submitted documents in paper form if a grant is awarded!

1. Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD portal

For type A and type B applicants:

  • Online application form
  • Cover page
  • Statement of the reasons for applying for a certain Fellowship: Appendix
  • Complete curriculum vitae;
  • List of publications, if applicable;
  • Abstract of the final Master or PhD thesis (max. 3 pages);
  • University degree certificate indicating final grade(s): the certificate must be subsequently submitted before the grant-supported research begins if it is not available at the time of application
  • English language certificate giving evidence of the applicant’s Level of proficiency (e.g. TOEFL CBT 213-240; TOEFL IBT 79-95, IELTS 6.5-7.0, CAE, C1)
  • German or English translation of documents submitted in the national language
  • All university certificates on all annual examinations with individual grade(s), incl. explanation of grading system

2. To be submitted by post to the application address

  • Two recent references from senior academics who provide information about your qualifications. Please regard the instructions given on the tab “Submitting an application”
  • Applicants are not required to submit any confirmation of academic supervision

Important notice for all applicants:

Within the DLR-DAAD program, you can apply only for a DLR institute, not for a university or any other institution.

By applying for a fellowship within the ‘DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships’ Program you give your consent to the DAAD to forward your documents and your personal details to DLR and its relevant institutions. The DAAD and the DLR will not pass on your details to third parties.
