Blockchain – the technology underpinning smart contract platforms (e.g. Ethereum), digital currencies (e.g. Bitcoin), and digital payment clearing systems (e.g. Ripple) – is a technological innovation that is revolutionising industries/public sector and driving economic change on a global scale by reducing the cost of transactions and the time-lapse of working through intermediaries. According to the World Economic Forum, 10% of economic transactions (globally) are expected to be stored with blockchain technology by 2027. The demand for blockchain-related skills, such as communicating the merits of blockchain technology and delivering practical blockchain technology solutions for businesses and public administrations, in the ICT sector evolves quickly making continuous professional up-skilling and development of such core competencies essential. The BLISS VOOC is a comprehensive online course on blockchain technology and practical applications that allows learners to follow flexible learning pathways for strengthening their key digital and entrepreneurship skills.

Learning Units

The course is divided into 4 learning units:

  1. Blockchain essentials
  2. Blockchain platforms
  3. Business merits, challenges and implications of blockchain technology
  4. Practical design and development of blockchain applications

What will you learn from this course?

  • Give an account of the advantages and disadvantages of the features of a specific blockchain application, namely in terms of security, decentralization and consensus attainment
  • Autonomously explain the operation of a smart contract in a given blockchain
  • Evaluate the feasibility of implementing the specified decentralized blockchain
  • Provide expertise to report on a detailed plan of tests of the specified decentralized blockchain application
  • Interpret the legal, regulatory and consumer challenges to wider blockchain adoption and conformance
  • Monitor the intervention of blockchain technology in business models
  • Analyse blockchain SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) for specific industry scenarios
  • Intelligibly present blockchain industry business models
  • Communicate business opportunities behind the limits of the blockchain
  • Critically evaluate the technical options for blockchain solution suitable to varied practical scenarios
  • Report on the feasibility of selected blockchain solution to the specific scenarios
  • Account for optimization of application development, maintenance and performance by employing design patterns and by reusing proved solutions
  • Autonomously report on the advancement of the application development
